SpongeBob is the parallel character to Mercutio in the puppet play revision of Romeo and Juliet. SpongeBob is
parallel to Mercutio because of their dispositions. SpongeBob is an entergetic, fun-loving guy. He wants nothing
more than to run around causing a chaotic mess, but he still cares for his friends. SpongeBob loves a party as
much as he loves catching jellyfish. Mercutio mirrors many of these qualities. He is an absolute party animal; in
fact, he is once portrayed as a cross dresser in a movie. However, Mercutio still cares for Romeo and wants
him to enjoy himself, just as SpongeBob is for Squidward. This is why Spongebob is such a good match for
Mercutio. In the skit, Spongebob uses many phrases from under the sea, such as Dear Neptune and Tartar Sause.
Also, Spongebob makes many references to his life. He talks about Krabby patties, and in the TV show,
Spongebob Squarepants, Spongebob has a job as a fryer at a local diner. There he is famous for making the
Krabb Patty. Furthermore, Spongebob portrays one of his greatest joys in life in our skit, singing. Spongebob
sings his version of the “F.U.N. Song” in attempt to cheer up poor Squidward. My group used these saying to
bring more of the fun-loving Spongebob into the skit. In this particular scene, Romeo and Murcutio are arguing
over whether or not to go to this party. It is a pretty tense scene, but unfortunately Spongebob is not a serious
character. My group added these saying to try and lighten the mood of the skit. Spongebob is a pretty happy
guy, and my group tried to display this through the “F.U.N. Song.” Squidward makes it clear he does not want
to have fun, yet Spongebob in a terrible attempt to change his mind sings that song, just like he would have
done in the show. My group did their best to reveal the best Spongebob we could in Mercutio’s standpoint.

Patrick plays a parallel role to Benvolio. In Scene 4 Act I of Romeo and Juliet, Benvolio plays more of a
laid back character. He wants nothing more than to get to that party, but he attempts to keep the peace
between Mercutio and Romeo. Patrick is much the same way. Patrick is a slow starfish. In the show
SpongeBob Squarepants, he often interjects random comments and makes stupid mistakes. Though
Benvolio is not stupid, he does not play a pivotal part in this scene. He just seems to be there and throws
a comment in now and again much the same way Patrick does. Patrick does not add much to our skit. He
just seems to be there hanging out until Spongebob and Squidward are ready to go. But when Patrick
does talk, he just emphasizes his lack of intelligence. He shows this when he displays his painting. In the
skit, Squidward is depressed because his painting was rejected. As Spongebob tries to talk Squidward out
of his slump, Patrick interrupts out of nowhere and exclaims he likes finger painting. Then, he proceeds
to show the world his painting. He had no impact on Squidward what so ever, except his disgust. Though
Romeo is not contemptible toward Benvolio, Romeo takes no heed to him at all. The scarce lines he does
speak are not that important. Patrick and Benvolio seem to be there to take up space. They have little to
no major part in this scene in Romeo and Juliet, yet they are there just the same.

In the SpongeBob revision of Romeo and Juliet, Squidward plays Romeo. During the scene before the Capulet’s party, Romeo is quite depressed from the bleak prospects of his love life. Romeo wants nothing to do with the party animal mood. He simply wants to be left alone to sulk. Squidward is a perfect match for this part. Squidward is a crotchety squid who is anything but merrymaking, especially when he has had a letdown. The rejection of his painting would make Squidward even more depressed than his normally bleak self; making Squidward the perfect Romeo. Though Squidward makes the perfect depressed Romeo, he also stays true to himself in many ways. One such way was his pet names for those around him. He has dubbed Spongebob and Patrick a moron and just Patrick an idiot. The best was his nick-name for himself true to the under-the-sea lingo; he called himself a barnacle head. These sayings not only display the unhappiness Romeo would have felt but also Squidward’s normal, run-of-the-mill character. Another way Squidward is the perfect, miserable Romeo is through his sarcasm. Romeo is not a terribly sarcastic person, but he loves to play on words. Squidward’s way of playing on words is his sarcasm. He best portrays it when he is argueing about the “F.U.N. Song” with Spongebob and Patrick. Squidward outright tricks Patrick and makes him look like a fool. These are all great examples of why Squidward and Romeo are similar and parallel to each other.
